Editions

Setting up an edition with its proofs, pulling and recording impressions, pricing, certificates of authenticity, and the sales reports.

Updated 2026-09-09

Editions is the ledger. Every impression you pull gets a number, a place, a grade and a history. When a collector asks in four years what paper 4/10 was printed on, the answer is on this screen.

An edition in Brayer: Hare, an edition of 1 plus 1 AP, both impressions pulled and photographed, with the impression grid and the pricing calculator on the right.

Editions · Hare · edition of 1 + 1 AP · the AP in studio, the numbered impression gifted

Setting up an edition

Open a project and go to Editions in the project menu. Tap Set up edition.

Field What it sets
Edition title Defaults to the project title
Edition size The numbered impressions
Artist's proofs (AP) Yours to keep
Printer's proofs (PP) For whoever pulled it, if that is not you
Trial proofs (TP) The ones on the way to the BAT
Hors commerce (HC) Not for sale
BAT One, always. Bon à tirer: the proof every impression is matched to.
Image size, paper sheet In millimetres. "Use block size" fills the image size from the project.
Signed year, technique Printed on the certificate
Defaults for new impressions The paper and ink recipes each new impression starts with

The BAT is not optional and cannot be more than one. That is the point of it.

The impression grid

The grid lays impressions out in printmaking order, not the order you pulled them: BAT, then trial proofs, then artist's proofs, then the numbered edition, then printer's proofs, then hors commerce.

Empty slots read "not pulled yet. Tap to pull." Filled ones show the number, the location and a photo if there is one. The primary button says "Pull next · 4/10", and it always knows which slot is next.

Logging the next impressions of an edition

Above the grid sit the counts that matter: pulled out of the edition size, sold, in studio, with gallery.

One impression

Tap an impression for its record.

Section What you record
Impression photo The pulled sheet
Condition & location Quality grade A, B, C or Reject; location In studio, Framed, With gallery, Shipped, Sold, Gifted, Destroyed or Lost, with a line of location detail
Materials The paper, and the ink recipes from your Studio library
Price This impression's price, or the edition default
Sale The buyer and the sale, once logged
Certificate & verification Generate the COA, and the verification token
Notes "Slight offset top-left; kept for the archive"

Grade the rejects and keep them in the record. An edition of ten that quietly had four failures is a different edition from one that had none, and only you will ever know unless you write it down.

Mark complete

When the edition is finished, tap Mark complete. It asks first, because it freezes things:

  • The edition becomes committed.
  • Its size can no longer decrease.
  • No impression can be pulled beyond the edition size.

That is what an edition means. The header then shows the date it was committed instead of the button.

The pricing calculator

Beside the grid, on the dark card.

Input Notes
Materials Per impression, or total for the edition
Hours worked Tap to pull the real hours from your logged sessions
Hourly rate Yours
Reputation Emerging ×0.8, Established ×1.0, Recognized ×1.5, Collected ×2.0
Target margin A percentage on the subtotal
Channel Etsy, Instagram, Direct, Exchange, Gallery, Show, Other, each with its usual commission

It shows the work: materials per impression, labour per impression, subtotal, margin, commission gross-up, then a suggested price. The commission gross-up matters. A gallery taking 50% means the price has to carry the commission, not absorb it.

Tap "Save as edition price" to make the number the default for new impressions.

The community benchmark under the suggestion is static in this version. Treat it as a sanity check, not a market.

Certificates of authenticity

Generate COA on one impression, or Generate all COAs from the edition header for the whole set at once. The certificate carries the title, the impression number, the technique, the image and paper dimensions, the papers and inks, the year, and a QR code with a verification token.

Share the PDF, or Print COAs straight to AirPrint. On a large edition the batch renders in the background and the button counts up while it works.

The certificate points at verify.brayer.app. The verification endpoint is not live yet, so the token on the certificate is a record you hold, not a page a buyer can load today.

Across all projects

The Editions surface in the sidebar is the same records seen from above, in five tabs.

Brayer's Editions surface listing every impression across every project, with photographs of the two hare impressions beside the rest.

Editions · every impression across every project · six in all

Tab What it shows
All impressions Every impression in the studio, filterable and searchable. Type "3/10" or a project title.
By project Grouped, with counts, sold and revenue per project
By buyer Everyone who has bought, what they bought, when, and their contact details
Sales reports Revenue by year, by channel and by project, exportable as CSV
Consignments What is out with which gallery, at what commission, and when it is expected back
The Reports tab in Brayer's Editions surface: sales by project and by buyer, exportable as CSV.

Editions · reports

CSV export comes in two forms: "Export CSV — no buyer data" and "Export CSV — with buyer data". Pick the first for your accountant's summary and the second only when the names need to travel. Buyer details are personal data, and Brayer never sends them anywhere on its own.

Quick log sale

Tap Log a sale from the Editions surface when a print sells and you are not in the project. Pick the impression (only unsold ones are offered), set the date, price, channel and reference, and pick or create the buyer. Logging a sale sets the impression's location to Sold and links the buyer.

Not in this version

There is no payment processing. Brayer records that a sale happened, at what price, through which channel. Taking the money stays where it already is: your shop, your gallery, your bank.
