The Library and projects
Making a project block-first, reading the module dots, filtering and sorting the grid, and printing the QR block label.
Updated 2026-09-09
The Library is where every project lives. One card per project, the block size under the title, and six dots that tell you which modules have work in them.

Making a project
Tap New project. The sheet is headed BLOCK FIRST, and the order of the fields is deliberate: the block is the fixed physical thing, and every module downstream conforms to it.
- Give it a title. You can rename later from the project menu.
- Pick a template. It sets the technique and the number of starting layers.
- Set the block dimensions, in mm or inches.
- Pick the block material.
- Add a colour tag and notes if you want them.

Templates
| Template | What it sets up |
|---|---|
| Blank | Start from nothing. Linocut, one layer. |
| Single block | One block, one colour. Linocut, one layer. |
| Multi-block | One block per colour. Three layers. |
| Reduction | Carve away, layer by layer. Four layers. |
| Chine-collé | Collaged paper layers. One layer. |
Block presets
Under the width and height fields sit the sizes blocks are actually sold in. Four COMMON metric sizes (100 × 150, 150 × 200, 200 × 300, 300 × 400 mm), two ESSDEE sheets (A5 and A4), and three SPEEDBALL blocks (4 × 6, 5 × 7 and 8 × 10 in). Tap one and the fields fill in. Switch the unit and everything converts.
Materials
Battleship lino, Softcut, Easy-cut, Mounted lino, Wood, Rubber, Other. The material is not decoration: Carve plan uses it to estimate carving time, because softcut clears faster than battleship.
The preview column on the right draws the block at its true proportions while you type, so a number typed in the wrong field is obvious before you commit.
Reading a card
Each card carries a cover image, a badge, the title, the specification line and the module dots.
| On the card | What it means |
|---|---|
| Cover | The design, or the latest impression photo |
| Badge | The edition state: "Edition 3/8", "Complete · 8/8", "Edition planned", or the separation, for example "Reduction · 4 layers" |
| Specification | Block size and technique, for example "100 × 150 mm · Reduction" |
| Six dots | Design, Separate, Carve plan, Studio log, Editions, Exchange. Filled means that module holds something. |
| Continue line | The module the project was last open in |
Touch and hold a card for its actions: Open, Star, Duplicate, Archive, Print block label, Export .relief. The same actions are in the project title menu once the project is open.
Finding things
The filter bar above the grid has five chips: All, In progress, Complete, Starred, Archived. The sidebar's Collections repeat Starred, In progress and Archived, and the two stay in step.
The search field beside them matches project titles, ink recipes and editions. For a wider sweep, use universal search from the magnifying glass in the top bar.
Sort is in the options menu at the top right: Recently updated, Title, Created. The chip reads "Sort: recent", "Sort: title" or "Sort: created" so you always know which one is on.
The same options menu holds the "Show sample project" switch, the sidebar toggle, and Import .relief.
Duplicating, archiving, starring
- Duplicate copies the project and appends "copy" to the title. Use it when you want to try a second colour plan without disturbing the first.
- Archive takes a project out of the grid and puts it in the Archived collection. Nothing is deleted. Unarchive puts it back.
- Star pins a project into the Starred collection.
- Delete is in the project title menu, and it asks first.
The QR block label
A cut block on the bench looks like every other cut block six months later. The block label fixes that.
Open a project and choose Block label from the title menu, or Print block label from a card's menu. The sheet renders a label carrying the project title, the block dimensions, the date the block was cut, the edition line, and a QR code. Scan the code with the block scanner in universal search and the app opens that project.
Two choices on the sheet:
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Layout | Single label, or Sheet of 18 |
| Paper | A4 or US Letter |
Then Print, or Share to save the PDF.
Print it at 100%. Turn off "scale to fit". The sheet says so on the page: cut on the dotted line and tape the label to the back of the block.
What is not here
Projects live on this iPad only. There is no iCloud sync in this version, so a project on your iPad is not on your Mac or a second iPad until you export a .relief bundle and bring it across. See Relief bundles.
